Create A New Site Content Image

You must be logged in as administrator to create images.

For each image you need a thumbnail and a full sized image. Create the full sized image and compress it with jpeg or gif format until it is the lowest size possible while retaining enough image clarity. There are many image editors that will do this for you, Adobe Photoshop, JASC Paint Shop Pro and Macromedia Fireworks are some of the best programs to use although there are many others. When deciding on the actual image size it is worth noting that there are many internet users who use a screen resolution only 800 pixels wide, so I would suggest keeping images less than 780px wide.

The thumbnail is not used on the site, and is only used for selecting images to be included. This means that the quality can be set to as low as possible. The actual image size for the thumbnail should be 75 x 75 pixels, although this is not critical. The file size should be less than 10Kb.

Description Of Image Set
This description of the image is for two reasons. Firstly so you can find your images quickly with an image search, and secondly and more importantly, when the mouse is rolled over the image it displays the image description.

Create A New Astro Image

To create an astro image, then you do exactly the same as the site image at this stage and create a description, thumbnail and main image. The main image again should be less than 780px if you want it to fit on most peoples screens. The difference between a site image and an astro image is that you can add different resolution images, and any other related images for that matter for the user to look at, and you can add the image details and notes relating to the image.

Firstly just fill out the form, and click 'Add Image'.

Once the image is added, you will be given an option to edit the new image. Click on it and you will go to a the edit image page. Here you can upload all the related images. A related image can be anything such as different resolution images, the luminance or filtered components, comparison images, inverted images or anything you want. The related images will then automatically be offered to the user on the main image page.

You will also now have a new menu button appear - 'Image Text'. This has two options, Image Description and Image Details.

Image Description
This is where you can put any text you like, maybe a description of your processing technique or object description. You can also format the text however you wish.

Image Details
The image details are self explanatory. The only mandatory fields are the image date and the Image/Page title. Everything else is optional and will only appear if there is anything entered.

If the image title is left blank then your users will not be able to find the image as it will not appear on the site. Leave it blank if it is just a site image and not an astro image.

The date is important as it is used to calculate latest images.

Messier, caldwell, ngc, ic, sharpless and abell are all for catalogue numbers and must be entered as M45 or NGC6946 - include the first part and not just the number.

Object type is important as it is used for searches. For search purposes always include words that will be searched for such as:

Galaxy, nebula, solar system, cluster, globular etc - that way when a user searches for galaxy - all the galaxies will appear etc.

The rest of the fields can be used however you like and even skipped if you want.Help - Image Details
