Creating Buttons & Menus
|
Each button is a menu that can have links appear when the mouse runs over it. Just as the 'Site Admin' button has a menu appear when you roll over it. To make things more flexible (and complex), you can have another menu as a link - i.e. the 'Edit Content' link on the 'Site Admin' menu is also a menu with links that appear beside it. In total you can have 5 levels of menus and links although I doubt anyone would ever need that amount. These are: A. Top Menu B. Sub Menu (Level 2) C. Sub Menu (Level 3) D. Sub Menu (Level 4) E. Sub Menu (Level 5) A top menu item will appear (when it is selected for a page) on the top menu bar. So before we create a huge menu system, we will just create a new button - If you are new to this, then please go along with this tutorial. You can delete the buttons created in this tutorial afterwards. Go to 'Site Admin / Site Buttons' and click on add a new button. Button Heading Text This is the text that is displayed on the main button. It cannot be more than 20 characters in length. Enter 'Test Button'. Button Link This is the link that the main button goes to. For instance on the 'Site Admin' menu, when you click on 'Site Admin' rather than any of the drop down list that appears, you go to the admin main page. This does not have to have a link with it - it's your choice. There are 3 types of links that you can add: 1. External Link. 2. Internal Page Link. 3. Internal Image Link. 1. Inserting an External Link. An external link is any link that goes outside of your site. Select external link from the box that appears. Enter the link destination in the input box, the link must be complete in the format 'http:www.xyz.com' or 'http.abc.net/sample.htm'. You can alternatively just type the link directly into the Button Link input. 2. Inserting an Internal Page Link Select internal page link from the box that appears and a drop down menu appears, from the list click on the page you want to link to. 3. Inserting an Internal Image Link Select internal image link from the box that appears and a drop down menu appears, from the list click on the image page you want to link to. For the moment select any link you want - in this tutorial I will link the top button to the home page. Top Rollover Button Style This is the style of the main rollover that makes the drop down menu appear. You can choose from the styles you have loaded. For now leave it as style1 - the default style. Button Type As we are making a completely new button then this will be A. Top Menu - so this will be a top level button that appears on top bar of all pages that include it (you will see what I mean later if you don't already). Menu Position This is where the drop down menu appears in relation to the rollover button. As it is a top level button we should have the position as 'Below'. Links Style This is the style of the drop down menu links. For now we will leave it as default - style1. Drop Down Link Text This is the text for the buttons on the drop down menu fill in 2 of them, 'Contact Us' and 'Google Search'. Drop Down Link Target These are the targets for the links we included. So next to Contact Us click the Insert Link button, select 'Link To Internal Site Page' and select the contact page from the list. Now next to Google Search type in the box http://www.google.com You should have the same as this: Click 'Add Button'.Now you have created the button, we need to add it to a page. For now we will just add it to the home page. Select from the Site Admin menu 'Edit Content / Select Page To Edit' and select the Home Page. In the buttons available you will now see the 'Test Button' that we created. Tick the box beside it and 'Update Page'. Now go to the home page and you will see the result. Creating Sub Menu'sNow we will create a sub menu from our Test Button. Click 'Add Button' from the site admin menu and fill in the fields as below: ![]() The difference between this and the 'Test Button' is that this Button Type is B. Sub Menu (Level 2) and the Menu Position is Right. Create the button by clicking 'Add Button'. Now we want to add the menu to the 'Test Button'. Select from the admin menu 'Site Buttons / Edit Button' and select our 'Test Button'. You will notice an extra column here that is for adding drop down menus. On the next blank line under the last link, instead of adding a new link, use the far right column and select from the drop down list the drop down menu 'My Links'. ![]() Hit 'Update Button' and go to the home page to see the results. Ok now we will create another sub menu to drop from our links sub menu. Create a new button as before but use the button type 'C. Sub Menu(Level 3)'. When created add it to the button 'My Links' by selecting it from the drop down menus on the right. Once created and added you will see that you can make a complete navigation system by using these buttons and drop down menus.
